Movie Reviews

There are many great films out in the theaters right now and absolutely wonderful films being released on DVD (I prefer Blu-Ray) that were Oscar nominated. Unfortunately because of my busy schedule, I have not been able to make it to the box office recently, but I have heard great things regarding the special effects in “Noah”, also Wes Anderson’s “The Grand Budapest Hotel” seems like a delightful film filled with wonderful acting. One film I would love to see is “Need for Speed” just because of the Aaron Paul factor and how his career will shape after his unforgettable run on “Breaking Bad”.

Many great films are being released to DVD this month, for example “The Wolf of Wall Street”, “American Hustle”, “Gravity”, “Dallas Buyers Club”, and “Inside Llewyn Davis”, which are all fantastic films from great directors with superb actors, but they were expected to be great. Recently, I had the pleasure of watching “Out of the Furnace”, Scott Cooper’s lastest film, and was utterly surprised at the depth of the story and the way the actors took on the brevity of the film, which could have easily become a Nicholas Cage nonsense thriller (why does he keep making movies?). On the other hand, I also watched “Blue Jasmine”, after the recommendation from a friend and to see what the hype was all about regarding Cate Blanchett’s performance (she was amazing), and honestly had trouble grasping the meaning of the film and the plot that was simultaneously occurring. It was a classic Woody Allen film, which are hit and miss with me every time, but it just seemed like the film lacked a theme to strive for and was only held above water by the amazing acting job of Blanchett.

I will try to post movie reviews of films still in theater if I find to time to see them. Until then, if you beat me to the theater, let me know what you think of the recent releases, and whether they are worth the watch.

Anchorman 2 Poster

“Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues” (2013)

Directed by Adam McKay

Cast: Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, Christina Applegate, David Koechner, Maegan Good, James Marsden, and whole slew of other famous guest appearances

Will Ferrell and Adam McKay tried to bring back the magic from the cult classic “Anchorman” in this highly anticipated sequel. The News Team was all together again after all going in their separate directions since the end of the last film. Hilarity ensues from the get go of this epic tale, regardless of how the stupidity meshes with the plot of the storyline.

The introduction of new characters, such as Jack “Lame” (James Marsden) and Maegan Good as the head of the station, present new avenues of fresh jokes which play well with the audience, especially the family dinner scene which may be the funniest scene in the movie. However, many of the jokes between the returning cast members seem to be rehashing the same old lines from the first movie, and do not get me wrong they are still funny, but the dialogue seemed to be strained and missing pieces at times. Furthermore, the epic battle scene between the competing news team returns with an introduction of many guests appearance while also playing the irony of a diluted media scene with too many different outlets.

Many times the film gets bogged down in the stupidity, but luckily there are many comedic geniuses in this cast that helped save it, especially Steve Carrell. I would rate the film a 3.5 out of 5, only because it had me belly laughing a few times.

Rush Movie Poster

“Rush” (2013)

Directed by Ron Howard

Cast: Chris Hemsworth, Daniel Bruhl, Olivia Wilde, and Alexandra Maria Lara

Sport-themed movies love to dramatize the subject and individual involved. Ron Howard embarked on an adventure to explore a rivalry, a sport, and a certain way of life. Ron Howard took on the challenge and masterly crushed it. Howard has taken on large projects before ranging from “The Da Vinci Code” to “Cinderella Man”, and not to take anything away from those previous films, but Ron Howard has produced the best work of his career.

The rivalry between James Hunt (Hemsworth) and Nicki Louda (Bruhl) was broadcast throughout their entire world as it spearheaded into the championship chase standings of Formula One in 1976. Two entirely different characters, both cast out by their high-standing parents, began their chase to the winner’s circle in the lower ranks of Formula One. They rose through the ranks together, each trying to better the other and be the first to the finish line. Howard begins this showcase with their first meeting at a Formula Three race then transitioning to showing various scenes within the character’s individual lives. These various scenes allow Howard to explore the personalities of the wild English playboy and the Austrian mathematical tactician.

Even more impressive than character angles taken on by the film are the camera angles and views during the driving scenes. For a viewer to be able to feel the full force of these powerful machines is an impressive feat. Switching camera angles from the front of the car, to in the cockpit, to the view from the driver’s perspective, all the while going full circle to see the emotions on the faces of the crew members, race fans, and their family members.

Ron Howard and the two lead roles (Hemsworth & Bruhl) do an excellent job of grabbing the attention of the audience when the distraction seems to be lingering. Off the race track is where the film overall is at its best because it is easy to hold the audience on the edge of their seat during the races, but when the action and adrenaline has the left screen, Hemsworth and Bruhl excel. They excel not only in the dynamic of their rivalry but also in their individual emotional and the way they handle different types of emotions so differently.

Overall, the film delivers from all aspects and captivates the audience from beginning to end. Ron Howard has sculpted his craft in directing over the years and is finally hitting his stride, while hopefully this is not the climax of his career but the beginning of a long run of phenomenal films. Hemsworth shows that he has the acting skills to excel at more than just a demigod (“Thor”) and has the ability to play more dramatic, somber roles. On the other hand, Bruhl is bursting onto the scene and delivering dramatic performances again and again.

In conclusion, I would give the film a 4.5 out of 5 rating.
